Woodrow Wilson School showcase award-winning school program
( SOURCE UNION CITY REPORTER )

Last week, there was only one place local residents could have learned poetry, sign language, yoga, photography, and financial management in three hours; that place was Union City's Woodrow Wilson School.

Wilson recently celebrated its annual Multiple Intelligences Arts Domain (MIAD) showcase event with a special presentation to parents and family members of the school's k-8 students.

Through the "Visions: a journey through the MIAD experience" showcase, students were able to create different workshops in their respective fields to demonstrate their acquired skills.

The MIAD program is a highly-awarded program to the Wilson school that enhances students' problem-solving skills beyond mathematical and verbal means (see sidebar.)

At one point or another, everyone has gotten sick of the elevator music that taunts listeners while placed on hold and has just hung up the phone. Enter health care agency North Hudson Community Action Corp (NHCAC).

As part of its latest plan to address patient redirecting and improving patient service, the regionalized health care agency officially unveiled the opening of its one-stop call center equipped with call-monitoring technology.

The call center, located on the first floor of St. Joseph's High School on 55th Street and Park Avenue in West New York, celebrated its official ribbon cutting ceremony last Wednesday, Feb. 6.

President and CEO of NHCAC Chris Irizarry hopes patients can first turn to this call center to facilitate their needs.

The call center was funded by a $172,000 state grant from the Health Department, a grant New Jersey Primary Care Association President and CEO Katherine Grant-Davis helped secure.

"In 1994, they were the smallest health center," said Davis, "and now they're the largest. They've been very diligent in increasing access to community."

Residents, local businesses participate in career day
( SOURCE UNION CITY REPORTER )

Forget Monster, the classifieds, or employment agencies; the real place to find a job last week for unemployed locals was Hudson County's own town of West New York.

Working together, the North Hudson Community Action Corp (NHCAC) and the West New York Housing Authority sponsored a career day to celebrate the opening of West New York's brand new community center.

The Jan. 15 event kicked off several new additions to the first-floor center at the 515 54th St. apartments, including recreational additions for residents to enjoy.

Celebrating the event was Mayor Sal Vega, NHCAC CEO Chris Irizarry, Union City Mayor Brian Stack and West New York Housing Authority officials.

However, local residents in search of new career options were the ones that really shined. Most residents, and employers alike, came from West New York with some locals also coming from Union City, North Bergen, and even Jersey City.
